Guest Speaker: Peter Hill – Scapes
February 5 @ 7:30 pm - 9:30 pm
Direct from Katoomba, Australia, via Zoom, our guest speaker will be Peter Hill, an award winning black and white photographer. Although many of his awards are in landscape and nature, he shoots in a wide range of genres including abstracts, street, architecture, portraits, etc. Due to the very positive feedback we received from members on Peter’s previous talks, we have invited him back to talk about ‘scapes’.
This presentation will be focused on photographic issues associated with: landscapes, cityscapes, seascapes, waterscapes, and cloudscapes.
We will look at each type of scape in turn, with plenty of photographic examples, but without trying to define their scope, as some scapes can blend into each other. We will instead ask and hopefully answer questions such as: what challenges does each scape represent to the photographer? What makes a ‘good’ scape photograph? People in scapes – good or bad? Do particular scapes require particular camera and other gear? As we take this geographically inclined journey we won’t dwell on the question of colour versus black & white for scapes, but we may touch on it.
We will, however, definitely deal with the following specific topics, and more:
- A short, illustrated, history of landscape photography
- People in landscapes and the sometimes thin line between scale, story, and self-centred narcissism
- How to photograph a waterfall
- The art of getting in close and cropping the frame
- Tips, tricks, and traps for the photographer in each scape
- Getting on top of things in cityscapes
- The difference between a cityscape and a street shot
- Breaking the rules of composition for a seascape
Guests are welcome for this talk, please complete the Guest Registration Form . We will be in contact. The guest fee is $10.
