How To Hold a Successful Exhibition
You have reached a level of expertise and creativity in your photography and thoughts turn to an exhibition. All that positive feedback on your work makes you wonder if the general public will feel the same way, and you are feeling confident enough to say “Look, this is what I can do.”
But what do I do next?
This workshop will seek to answer the following questions and guide you to making the right decisions to hold a successful exhibition:
Why? Why hold an exhibition? Vanity or to make money? Other reasons?
Where? Where is the best place to realize my dream? A café? A market? A pop-up gallery? A real gallery? Each has advantages. And disadvantages.
When? Timing is everything! How long? A day? A weekend? A fortnight? A month?
Who with? Is it better to go solo?
What? The $64,000 question. What photographs am I going to exhibit? How do I decide? How many? Is a theme the best option? And who chooses them? A curator?
Printing? Do I use my Canon Pixma or a pro? What paper?
How? Framed or unframed? What sizes? What formats? What about titles? Tags? Display? Lighting? Do I need a catalogue? What about a price list?
Pricing!? How much? The $128,000 question. How do I set my prices? Cost plus? What the
other guy charges? What the other guy charges less 20%? What about Limited Editions? Yes? No?
Advertising and marketing – Do I really need to do all that?
Do I need a website? What about tax? Do I need a merchant machine or cash only?
Have I forgotten anything?

Direct from Katoomba, Australia, via Zoom, our guest speaker will be Peter Hill, an award winning black and white photographer. Although many of his awards are in landscape and nature, he shoots in a wide range of genres including abstracts, street, architecture, portraits, etc. Due to the very positive feedback we received from members on Peter’s talk on black & white photography last season, we have invited him back.
