DESCRIPTION: This year we will be participating in four CAPA (Canadian Association of Photographic Art) Competitions as a club.  \nFor the second CAPA competition\, the CAPA board has selected the Monochrome competition.  Our club will select six images\, which must be from different photographers\, to represent the club. \nPlease submit one digital image for consideration in the CAPA Nature Competition. \nSee CAPA Competitions under the Competitions menu tab for a brief description of the image themes\, image standards\, and file naming conventions. \nMonochrome photography challenges entrants to see beyond colour\, focusing on the interplay of light\, shadow\, texture\, and form to create compelling visual narratives. This section invites entrants to demonstrate their mastery of light and shadow\, contrast\, and composition through black and white imagery that strengthens rather than diminishes their subject’s impact. \nA monochrome image must fall into one of these two categories: \n\nA purely greyscale image using only black\, white\, and shades of grey\nA greyscale image that has been uniformly tinted with a single colour across the entire frame (such as sepia\, red\, or gold toning)\n\nAn image is NOT considered monochrome if it: \n\nHas selective colour toning in different areas\nIncludes spot colouring or partial colourization\nUses multiple tints or tones across different parts of the image\n\nSuch images that mix colours or toning effects are considered a monochrome and will be disqualified. \nFor competition purposes\, your image must fit into one of the following themes: \n\nCandid Person(s) – image that captures candid moments that reveal the humour\, irony\, and drama of the human experience.  Photograph people naturally\, without poising.  \nNatural Surroundings – image featuring weather phenomena\, geological formations\, cityscape\, landscapes\, seascapes and natural phenomena such as planets\, stars and astronomical events. Individuals can be included in the image provided that they enhance the perspective of the surroundings.\nDramatic Contrast & Shadows – is the focal point of the image.  Explore low-key\, silhouette\, and selective lighting effects to create bold graphic image. Everyday spaces reveal geometric shadows cast by individuals\, buildings\, signs structures and wildlife.\nNostalgia – image that evoke echoes of the past\, capturing scenes reminiscent of bygone eras.  Examples such as\, abandoned aircraft\, boats\, buildings\, ships\, still-life of antiques\, structures\, trains and vehicles. Wildlife subjects for this theme must be living free and cannot be living in traditional zoos\, open-range zoos\, game farms or other areas where they are under the care of man\, restrained and/or confined.\n\nFor this theme\, nature parks are considered natural environments because the animals are not in “controlled conditions“. \nWild animals and birds with scientific bands\, tags or radio collars\, are permitted in this theme\, but those with tethers or harness attachments are not permitted.\nNo domestic or feral animals/birds are permitted in this theme. The baiting of wildlife should be avoided as it may have long-term impacts.\nMust not intentionally spook.\nMust not stress out wildlife by getting too close.\nShould learn about the species’ behaviour and the ecology of the area.\nUse appropriate lenses and techniques that minimize stress.\nShould be a naturalist as well as a nature photographer\nShould be especially careful and respectful when photographing “species-at-risk” and threatened species consider avoiding the photography of “species-at-risk“\n\nThe Canadian federal Species At Risk Act – Schedule 1provides a listing of “species-at-risk”. The Act also outlines that it an offence to kill\, harm or harass a “species-at-risk”.  A good reference webpage is the Audubon’s Guide To Ethical Bird Photography.

SUMMARY:Outing:  Canadian Raptor Conservatory - Re-Scheduled - New Date June 22
DESCRIPTION:New Date is June 22nd.  All spots are taken for the outing. \nWould you like to get impressive pictures of Raptors (which includes owls) in flight and up close? The CRC is set up to provide great photo opportunities for these magnificent birds in natural surroundings. Some birds are presented static (sitting on a natural-looking perch) while others fly\, giving the possibility of great action flying shots. You are almost guaranteed good images! \nSome birds at CRC are there for rehabilitation\, while others are bred on site either for release or for educational purposes. You can read more about the CRC and what they do at https://canadianraptorconservancy.com \n \nDate: June 22nd\, 2025 \nTime: 1:00 – 3:00 pm \nLocation: Canadian Raptor Conservatory\, 2848 Front Rd\, Vittoria ON\, N0E 1W0 \nMeet in the parking lot/check in desk. \nThe total cost is $650 + HST = $734.50 for a maximum of 12 people. This means that we will have the whole session to ourselves and there will no problem with other people blocking your shot.  WE HAVE REACHED OUR MAXIMUM NUMBER OF PARTICIPANTS. \nNote that you do not need a very long focal length lens to get good shots at CRC\, as the birds are close. Even cell phones will give good pictures. A focal length that works well is around 55-200mm or up to 300mm max. But feel free to bring a variety of lenses. There is not a lot of walking involved.

DESCRIPTION:This theme concentrates on macro or minimalist photography. What is the link here? Minimalist photography can be summarized in one quote by Leonardo da Vinci: “Simplicity is the ultimate sophistication.” In other words\, less is more. By stripping a photo down to the bare essentials\, minimalist photographers show how powerful simplicity can be. There’s no clutter to distract viewers from the main subject. Strictly speaking macro-photography is when the image on the sensor is the same size or larger than the object itself. SUMMARY:Theme:  My Favourite Colour
DESCRIPTION:The challenge is to use a favourite colour and only that colour to create a monochrome image. Monochrome photography is photography where each position on an image records and shows a different amount of light (value\, lightness or saturation)\, but not a different color (hue). For example\, a blue vase on a blue tablecloth against blue wallpaper. These can be created either in-camera or in post-production. The items are all the same colour but different tones\, shades of the same colour. Although monochrome photography includes black and white\, it also includes images which are in shades of red\, or sepia for example. In other words\, all black and white photography is monochrome photography\, but not all monochrome photography is black and white. DESCRIPTION:Faceless Portraits. What is a faceless portrait? As its name says\, its any type of portrait in which you cannot see the person’s actual face. Its about finding other creative ways to depict a person and their identity and highlight other aspects of your subject (or yourself!). Hiding the face can be done by cropping the image\, using silhouette\, covering the face with hair\, hand\, hat or veil\, photographing from the back of the person\, with their head turned away or with their face in shadow\, photographing other body parts e.g. hand\, deliberately blurring the face e.g. with motion blur\, or using post-processing to remove or blur the face. \nSee How to Take Great Faceless Portraits (+ Posing Ideas) and 16 No Face Photo Ideas You Must Try in 2024 for more information and ideas.

DESCRIPTION:February theme (Feb 1st – 28th 2025) Curves and Lines. Curves and lines are everywhere around us.  \nTry to capture the energy and emotion that lines and curves bring to an image. Explore these powerful compositional elements and experiment with different creative perspectives to develop your unique photographic eye.  Play with perspective of angles and shapes\, framing and editing to highlight lines and curves in an innovative way. \nIn preparation for CAPA’s Curves and Lines competition (images due at HGCC on Mar 17th)\, think about the following themes \n\nGeometry in Nature – images that capture interesting natural shapes and patterns like spirals\, fractals waves\, etc… This theme highlights the curve and repetitions found in the natural world or created within a photographic image.\n\n\nLandscape – images capturing interesting architectural shapes\, leading lines\, patterns in rural or urban environments. This theme focuses on curves\, geometry\, and visual rhythm in human-made surroundings.\n\n\nMinimal Still Life – simple\, clean images of everyday objects arranged in repetitive patterns or positions to emphasize their curves and lines. This theme aims to find the curve and visual interest in mundane items.\n\n\nMotion and Flow – image capturing the curves and created by moving elements such as people\, animals\, vehicles\, water\, smoke etc. This theme focuses on using curves to show movement and energy.\n\n\nKaleidoscope Curves – image featuring interesting reflective symmetry (where shape or pattern is reflected in a mirror line or a line of symmetry)\, or a kaleidoscopic effect. Images will showcase curves\, lines\, and geometric shapes found in modern architecture. Submissions can feature architectural details such as stairs\, railings\, windows\, bridges\, and other structural elements. Creative perspectives showcasing the artistry of modern architectural designs are encouraged.

DESCRIPTION:Our Guest speaker is photographer Luba Citrin. \n   \nHer presentation via Zoom is entitled “Still\, … but not so Still Life”. She will share her approach to creating still life images that are different from traditional still life in art or photography.  ZOOM ONLY – no meeting at Coldwell Banker. \nLuba was a Computer specialist by profession. She took early retirement in 2010\, and bought her first digital camera to take on her canoe\, camping and travel journeys.  Since then\, photography has become a passion\, an obsession\, and a means to express herself through images.  \nShe enjoys all aspects of photography – nature\, landscape\, still life and fine art\, and has fun creating altered-reality images that have won many awards. \nShe is a member of Richmond Hill Camera Club and Toronto Digital Camera Club\, as well as an accredited judge with the  Ontario Council of Camera Clubs. \nIn her presentation she will show her workflow starting with idea\, set up and execution.
