SUMMARY:Dan Gillespie AV Show Night
DESCRIPTION:An evening in honour of Dan Gillespie. \nDan loved how AV shows brought members together. Help us continue this tradition and remember Dan by submitting an AV show to share. \nSubmit one AV show (in an .mp4 format) that is a maximum of 5 minutes long.  Since an audio visual show takes a bit more work to make\, you can share a collection of images that would be shown as a slide show by the moderator. \nBring your audio visual show on a USB stick.  Come early to load it on the club’s computer for presentation.  If participating via Zoom\, use one of the following procedures to submit your AV show (preferably by Jan 13th): \n\nIf you have your own file sharing system (Dropbox\, Google Drive\, etc)\, you can send the download link to submissions@highlandglen.ca and the moderator can collect the file.\nIf you want to send in a show\, send an email to submissions@highlandglen.ca and the moderator will send you a file request through Dropbox. The file request will provide a link for uploading the file.

SUMMARY:Guest Speaker: Peter Hill
DESCRIPTION:How To Hold a Successful Exhibition\nYou have reached a level of expertise and creativity in your photography and thoughts turn to an exhibition. All that positive feedback on your work makes you wonder if the general public will feel the same way\, and you are feeling confident enough to say “Look\, this is what I can do.” \nBut what do I do next? \nThis workshop will seek to answer the following questions and guide you to making the right decisions to hold a successful exhibition: \nWhy?  Why hold an exhibition?  Vanity or to make money?  Other reasons? \nWhere?  Where is the best place to realize my dream?  A café?  A market?  A pop-up gallery?  A real gallery?  Each has advantages. And disadvantages. \nWhen?  Timing is everything!  How long?  A day?  A weekend?  A fortnight?  A month? \nWho with?  Is it better to go solo? \nWhat?  The $64\,000 question.  What photographs am I going to exhibit?  How do I decide?  How many? Is a theme the best option?  And who chooses them?  A curator?  \nPrinting?  Do I use my Canon Pixma or a pro?  What paper? \nHow?  Framed or unframed?  What sizes?  What formats?  What about titles?  Tags?  Display?  Lighting?  Do I need a catalogue?  What about a price list? \nPricing!?  How much?  The $128\,000 question.  How do I set my prices?  Cost plus?  What the\nother guy charges?  What the other guy charges less 20%?  What about Limited Editions?  Yes? No? \nAdvertising and marketing – Do I really need to do all that? \nDo I need a website?  What about tax?  Do I need a merchant machine or cash only? \nHave I forgotten anything?\nYes! An Opening Night! \nDirect from Katoomba\, Australia\, via Zoom\, our guest speaker will be Peter Hill\, an award winning black and white photographer. Although many of his awards are in landscape and nature\, he shoots in a wide range of genres including abstracts\, street\, architecture\, portraits\, etc.  Due to the very positive feedback we received from members on Peter’s talk on black & white photography last season\, we have invited him back. \nGuests are welcome for this talk\, please complete the Guest Registration Form .  We will be in contact.  The guest fee is $10. \nPeter’s Flickr site: https://www.flickr.com/photos/51321042@N02/

SUMMARY:Hands-on Night: Bokeh
DESCRIPTION:Influential Photographer:  Roberta Bondar\n“My hypothesis is that if you fall in love with something you’ll embrace it as part of your heritage.  I think that if people are committing to actually taking a picture and seeing what they photograph\, it really makes them look — and that’s when people have respect. That’s when people honour and people maintain.” — Roberta Bondar \nHands-on Night: Capturing beautiful Bokeh for sparkling images\nTina will quickly review how to capture Bokeh before you get your camera out to play with twinkle lights. \nThere will be stations available for in-person – I have 8 sets of LED mini lights that are battery run – and I will bring some subjects.  If you prefer to follow along at home\, that is okay too\, but you will have to supply your own lights and subject (string of Christmas lights\, or mini-LED lights work great). \nFor in-person\, feel free to bring in some small subjects to work with and/or your own battery powered lights if you have them. \nTo capture dreamy bokeh you need to work with the widest aperture you can get – if you have a lens that can do f/4\, f/2.8\, f/1.8\, f/1.2 that would be the lens to use.  Standard or telephoto – but not a wide angle lens works best. \nUnleash your creativity\, and have fun! \nBring your camera and tripod.

SUMMARY:Guest Speaker: Bill Hall
DESCRIPTION:Image Evaluation & Feedback\nEvaluating someone else’s image can be a daunting task. You don’t want to hurt the\nmaker’s feelings\, but at the same time\, you want to tell them about the things that you\nbelieve would make for a stronger image. \nAnd what about evaluating your own images? That too can also be a difficult task as we\nall find it hard to be objective about something we have put a lot of time and effort into\nproducing. \nIdeally\, feedback should be a collaborative process between the maker and the person\nevaluating the image – think of it as a conversation. Tonight’s interactive presentation\nwill give you guidelines for consistent evaluation of photographic images (whether yours\nor someone else’s) and offer strategies for providing positive and effective feedback. \nAnd don’t worry\, there will be an opportunity to practice these skills during the evening. \nMany of you may already know Bill as he has judged some of our club competitions.  Bill is a local photographer who has judged local\, regional\, national and international photo competitions of prints\, projected images and audio-video shows. He has been a CAPA certified judge since 2011 and is the CAPA District Representative for Southwestern Ontario. \nGuests are welcome for this talk\, please complete the Guest Registration Form .  We will be in contact.  The guest fee is $10. \n** NOTE:  Meeting will be via Zoom due to projector issues. **
