SUMMARY:May Theme: Stuck In Motion
DESCRIPTION:We are looking for shots of moving animals\, people\, machines\, vehicles\, even plants! which show movement which is frozen by the camera.  When fast motion is stopped by the camera\, details not seen by naked eye may become evident\, e.g. when water movement is stopped by the camera. \nHere are some more ideas of motion that can be captured in a freeze frame; moving water and objects dropped into water\, steam\, droplets\, collisions\, explosions\, dancers\, sports events\, cycling\, cars\, birds in flight. Of course\, a high shutter speed is required\, although how high depends on how fast the subject is moving\, but usually at least 1/500 is needed\, ranging up to 1/4000 to freeze hummingbird wings. Burst mode is recommended useful to capture the exact moment of best interest. \nA flash can also be used to stop motion. \nOne other approach when you want to freeze the motion of just one object in the scene is to use a slower shutter speed and to pan the moving object with the camera. This results in a blurred background but a sharp subject. This works best with objects which move in a predictable fashion e.g. a car or cyclist passing by.

SUMMARY:October Theme: Monochrome
DESCRIPTION:Monochrome Theme Example by Jennifer Leat \n  \n“Monochrome comes from the Greek literally meaning mono (one) chrome (colour). It includes black and white but is not limited to black and white – it could be shades of red or blue\, as long as the hue (RGB ratios) remain the same. Colour is specified by 3 variables\, hue (what we normally mean by colour e.g. red or blue)\, saturation (how intense the hue is) and value (how light or dark it is).  A monochrome image typically only varies in value and the hue (and usually the saturation) remain constant.  \nMonochrome strips away the variations in colour\, which can sometimes overpower and distract the viewer to less relevant parts of the image. It forces the photographer to think of texture and shape and the story behind the photograph. Contrast can be increased in monochrome (especially black and white) in a way which might distort a coloured image. Based on the CAPA description “Monochrome photography challenges the photographer to see beyond colour\, focusing on the interplay of light\, shadow\, texture\, and form to create compelling visual narratives”. \nThis year\, CAPA defines two categories for monochrome:\n\nA pure greyscale image using only black\, white\, and shades of grey\nA greyscale image that has been uniformly tinted with a single colour across the entire frame (such as sepia\, red\, or gold toning)\n\nIf you are considering submitting for this CAPA competition\, make sure that you carefully check the requirements and sub-themes\, see 2026 Monochrome Competition – Canadian Association for Photographic Art \n  \nHow to convert a colour image to a monochrome single hue image (black and white tinted image).\nStep 1: Convert to Black & White (you may want to a adjust the sliders (like Contrast\, Highlights\, and Shadows) to build a strong tonal foundation for your monochrome image.\nStep 2: Apply a Tint Using Color Grading\n\n\nScroll down to the Color Grading panel. \n\n\nFor a single monotone tint (like sepia or cyanotype): Click on the Midtones wheel (the middle circle). Drag the center selector toward your preferred hue (e.g.\, a warm orange/sepia or a cool blue). \n\n\nFine-tune the Blending and Balance sliders at the bottom of the Color Grading panel to control how the tones merge across the image’s luminance values.\n\n\n A few example images with single hue provided by Jennifer Leat: \n \n \n

SUMMARY:Influential Photographer Harold Edgerton plus David duChemin - The Heart of the Photograph
DESCRIPTION:Influential Photographer:  HGCC member\, Brant Danard will present a short 15 minute introduction to Harold Edgerton. \n\nVirtual/Pre-taped Guest Speaker Presentation: David duChemin – The Heart of the Photograph \n \nA compelling photograph is more than visual. It’s visceral. We don’t only see it\, we feel it. It’s more than just focusing our lenses\, it’s also focusing the attention of those who will experience our photographs. Great gear helps\, but what about the other tools? What about juxtaposition and mystery\, story\, mood\, depth\, and energy? What about the power of a great moment? And when it comes to gear\, is it enough that we have all the tools\, like great optics\, or should we be developing a sensitivity to the unique ways in which different focal lengths amplify the feeling of a scene when used well? \n\n\nThe Heart of the Photograph is an inspiring presentation about these very ideas\, and it will change the way you make your photographs and reignite the spark if it has cooled off. \n\n\nPhotographer and best-selling author David duChemin has taught this amazing craft on all seven continents\, and has appeared on stages for companies like Amazon and Apple to teach the human side of this craft. With over 35 years experience making photographs\, his calling is to help photographers make photographs that are more than just sharp and well-exposed. David teaches how to make photographs that light a spark in people\, that communicate clearly\, that captivate imaginations and grab the attention and hearts of the people who will see them. As an international workshop leader and author of best-selling books like Within The Frame and The Soul of the Camera (both published in over a dozen languages)\, he’s taught students this incredible craft on all seven continents. David’s lecture will inspire you to go deeper with your craft and find greater joy—and freedom!—in the exploration of your vision. \n\n\nThis is a pre-recorded talk and there will be a discussion afterwards. A number of us have seen David talk in person and on video; he is an amazing and inspiring speaker. \nKhutzeymateen Inlet\, Northern British Columbia\, Canada \ncopyright David DuChemin \ncopyright David DuChemin \ncopyright David DuChemin \n\n

SUMMARY:Image Submission Due: CAPA Monochrome - Deadline - Nov 1
DESCRIPTION:Please submit 1 image for consideration for the club’s CAPA entry – we need 6 images from 6 different members – by 9 PM Nov. 1st.  Images must meet the CAPA image standards requirements.  A MailChimp will be sent with the submission procedure closer to the due date.  \nTexture & Detail – Images that highlight the tactile qualities of surfaces and materials through close\, attentive observation. Whether found in natural subjects such as bark\, stone\, and organic forms\, or in architectural elements and weathered objects\, these photographs should reveal patterns\, wear\, and structure with clarity. Successful entries evoke a physical response — making viewers feel as though they could reach out and touch the surface. \nMotion & Stillness – Images that explore the interplay between movement and static elements\, expressed through the tonal and interpretive power of monochrome. Techniques such as intentional camera movement\, long exposure\, panning\, or freezing action may be used\, but the emphasis is on how motion or stillness is conveyed through light\, contrast\, and form. Subjects may include flowing water\, moving crowds\, wind-shaped landscapes\, dancers\, machinery in operation\, or celestial motion. Successful entries demonstrate how monochrome distills motion or stillness into a compelling visual experience. \nIsolation & Solitude – Images that convey the experience of being alone — physically\, emotionally\, or psychologically. This may be expressed through a lone figure in a landscape\, a solitary person in an empty interior\, a contemplative face set against negative space\, or a tightly framed portrait that communicates emotional distance. While the theme naturally invites portraiture\, the challenge lies in using monochrome’s tonal range to articulate isolation with subtlety and intention. \nHands at Work – Images that explore craftsmanship\, labour\, and human endeavour through tools\, materials\, working environments\, or the traces left behind. Whether in agricultural fields\, construction sites\, workshops\, factories\, or artist studios\, these photographs emphasize the relationship between people and the work they carry out. Strong entries use monochrome’s tonal range to reveal effort\, skill\, and purpose with clarity and intention.

SUMMARY:HGCC Member Presentation: Jennifer Leat Dec. 7th
DESCRIPTION:Speaker Jennifer Leat “Iceland – land of water\, fire and ice” \n \nIceland is relatively young geologically and is still being formed and changed today\, due to its active volcanoes and its location on the divide between the North Atlantic and Euroasian tectonic plates. This results in dramatic and ever-changing landscapes – a photographer’s dream. You can see recent and old lava flows\, hot springs\, geysers\, and waterfalls in abundance. With its northerly location it also has some of the largest glaciers in Europe often ending in glacial lagoons. In this presentation\, Jennifer will share her experience of some of the amazing mountains\, bird life\, glaciers\, sulphur springs\, waterfalls\, and give anecdotes of the unique culture there. \nJennifer has been interested in photography since being a teenager and has taken photographs all around the world. In her career as an academic optometrist and researcher\, she had the opportunity to travel to some distant places\, including Tanzania\, Kenya\, Australia\, Hawaii\, Jamaica and of course she always took a camera. Her main photographic interests are wildlife (especially birds)\, macro\, landscapes and abstract/art photography. She is a member of GRIPS (reaching Advanced level) and Highland Glen Camera clubs. \n \n  \n  \n

SUMMARY:January Theme: Landscape photography
DESCRIPTION:Landscape Theme Example by Jennifer Leat \nWe hope that you were inspired by Bill Hall’s presentation on Landscape Photography at the beginning of the month. Landscape photography is a genre that we probably all have done\, even if we do not consider this one of our specific photographic interests. For example\, I am sure we all take landscapes when on holiday. So we hope that you will share some of your landscapes or go out and take some winter or urban landscapes this month. Landscape photography is not only those grand vistas of mountains\, but can also include focussing on smaller detail\, zooming in on part of a scene e.g. a single tree\, cityscapes\, and abstract landscapes which concentrate on color\, shape\, and patterns rather than a specific recognisable location. But the rules of composition and design will still apply!!  \nSome ideas can be found here An Introduction to Intimate Landscape Photography and The Many Faces of Landscape Photography | by Spencer Wade | Medium

SUMMARY:HGCC Member Presentation: Bill Hall "Beginner's Guide to Landscape Photography"
DESCRIPTION:Speaker Bill Hall “Beginner’s Guide to Landscape Photography”. \nLandscape photography is more than just documenting the location. Use it not only to share what you saw\, but the feelings and emotions of the moment. \nIn this presentation we’ll delve into the five elements that will take your landscape images from ordinary to extraordinary. We’ll look at the importance of planning\, controlling what you can and working with what you can’t control\, using visual design and technique to express your vision\, and adding the finishing touches in post-processing. \n Bill is a Kitchener-based photographer and has had a camera in his hands for as long as he can remember. While his photographic interests are diverse\, in recent years he has focused primarily on travel photography\, drawn by the variety it offers. Bill is passionate about sharing his travel experiences through his images. Together with his wife\, he has hosted photo tours to Scotland and the Yukon and has also co-hosted several day trips with Photo Tour Trekkers out of London\, Ontario. \nBill is the Director of the Judging Program for the Canadian Association for Photographic Art (CAPA) and is responsible for the training and certification of judges across Canada. \n  \nBill Hall “Beginner’s Guide to Landscape Photography”

SUMMARY:Meeting: Jan. 18th Dan Gillespie AV Night & Influential Photographer Diane Bos
DESCRIPTION:Influential Photographer Presentation:  Diane Bos \nDan Gillespie Audio Visual (AV Show Night): \nAn evening in honour of Dan Gillespie. \nDan loved how AV shows brought members together. SUMMARY:February Theme: Colour
DESCRIPTION:Colour Theme Example by Jennifer Leat \nColour is this month’s theme in preparation for the CAPA Inspirational Colour competition in which HG will be participating this month. Colour is a powerful tool in photography\, which different moods being created with warm versus cool colours. – warm colours such as red and orange\, are associated with energy and excitement\, while cool colors\, such as blue and green\, are associated with calm and relaxation. Complementary colours (opposite on the colour wheel) can create a sense of contrast and dynamism and can be used to draw attention to an object in the scene. Colour harmony refers to colours that are close on the wheel and create a sense of balance and unity. \nCAPA describes this competition and its themes as an invitation to photographers to showcase their creative skills\, using colour as a vibrant medium to capture dynamic\, outstanding\, stunning\, thoughtful and thought-provoking images. \nIf you are considering submitting for this CAPA competition\, make sure that you carefully check the requirements and sub-themes\, see 2027 Colour Competition – Canadian Association for Photographic Art \n

SUMMARY:CAPA Images Due: Feb. 15 for Colour Theme
DESCRIPTION:Inspirational Colour – HGCC Image Deadline – Feb 15 \nPlease submit ONE image for consideration to our submissions email by the due date.  In your email specify which one of the following themes your image is to be considered for. \nSee CAPA Competitions under the Competitions menu tab for a brief description of the image themes\, image standards\, and file naming conventions. \nTHEMES: \nCurves & Lines — “Where form meets colour” \nCreate images that highlight the interplay between curves and lines\, using colour to enhance form\, structure\, and visual impact. Subjects may include natural shapes\, botanical details\, architectural elements\, or abstract compositions — anything where colour and geometry work together to create an expressive design. \nMovement & Energy — “Freeze it\, blur it\, chase it”  \nImages that express motion and energy through the use of colour. Subjects may include sports\, dance\, urban life\, light trails\, or natural movement\, using techniques from frozen action to long exposure. Colour should amplify the sense of dynamism — adding impact\, rhythm\, or atmosphere to the motion portrayed. \nNature’s Palette — “No artist’s brush required”  \nImages that explore colour in undisturbed natural environments — from wildflowers and foliage to fungi\, geology\, bark\, ice\, and water. The emphasis is on naturally-occurring colour relationships and the beauty found in untouched landscapes and organic forms. \nColour with a Human Touch — “We leave our mark in colour”  \nImages where human influence makes colour the defining element. Subjects may include urban streetscapes\, architecture\, rural structures\, farmland\, workplaces\, or transportation — any environment shaped by people\, where colour adds impact\, identity\, or meaning. \nColours of Culture — “Colour as identity\, memory\, and belonging”  \nImages that celebrate cultural identity through colour — in traditional dress and textiles\, ceremonial attire\, cultural rituals\, Indigenous art forms\, body decoration\, or everyday moments where colour expresses heritage\, identity\, or tradition. The emphasis is on colour as a meaningful cultural language\, revealing how people and communities use it to tell their stories.
