SUMMARY:May Theme: Stuck In Motion
DESCRIPTION:We are looking for shots of moving animals\, people\, machines\, vehicles\, even plants! which show movement which is frozen by the camera.  When fast motion is stopped by the camera\, details not seen by naked eye may become evident\, e.g. when water movement is stopped by the camera. \nHere are some more ideas of motion that can be captured in a freeze frame; moving water and objects dropped into water\, steam\, droplets\, collisions\, explosions\, dancers\, sports events\, cycling\, cars\, birds in flight. Of course\, a high shutter speed is required\, although how high depends on how fast the subject is moving\, but usually at least 1/500 is needed\, ranging up to 1/4000 to freeze hummingbird wings. Burst mode is recommended useful to capture the exact moment of best interest. \nA flash can also be used to stop motion. \nOne other approach when you want to freeze the motion of just one object in the scene is to use a slower shutter speed and to pan the moving object with the camera. This results in a blurred background but a sharp subject. This works best with objects which move in a predictable fashion e.g. a car or cyclist passing by.

SUMMARY:October Theme: Monochrome
DESCRIPTION:Monochrome Theme Example by Jennifer Leat \nMonochrome is this month’s theme in preparation for the CAPA competition in November. Monochrome literally means “one colour” and so is not limited to black and white – it could be shades of red or blue. It strips away the colour\, which can sometimes overpower and distract\, and forces the photographer to think of texture and shape and the story behind the photograph. Contrast can be increased in monochrome in a way which might distort colours. Based on the CAPA description “Monochrome photography challenges the photographer to see beyond colour\, focusing on the interplay of light\, shadow\, texture\, and form to create compelling visual narratives”. \nIf you are considering submitting for this CAPA competition\, make sure that you carefully check the requirements and sub-themes\, see 2026 Monochrome Competition – Canadian Association for Photographic Art \n

SUMMARY:Influential Photographer Harold Edgerton plus David duChemin - The Heart of the Photograph
DESCRIPTION:Influential Photographer:  HGCC member\, Brant Danard will present a short 15 minute introduction to Harold Edgerton. \n\nVirtual/Pre-taped Guest Speaker Presentation: David duChemin – The Heart of the Photograph \n \nA compelling photograph is more than visual. It’s visceral. We don’t only see it\, we feel it. It’s more than just focusing our lenses\, it’s also focusing the attention of those who will experience our photographs. Great gear helps\, but what about the other tools? What about juxtaposition and mystery\, story\, mood\, depth\, and energy? What about the power of a great moment? And when it comes to gear\, is it enough that we have all the tools\, like great optics\, or should we be developing a sensitivity to the unique ways in which different focal lengths amplify the feeling of a scene when used well? \n\n\nThe Heart of the Photograph is an inspiring presentation about these very ideas\, and it will change the way you make your photographs and reignite the spark if it has cooled off. \n\n\nPhotographer and best-selling author David duChemin has taught this amazing craft on all seven continents\, and has appeared on stages for companies like Amazon and Apple to teach the human side of this craft. With over 35 years experience making photographs\, his calling is to help photographers make photographs that are more than just sharp and well-exposed. David teaches how to make photographs that light a spark in people\, that communicate clearly\, that captivate imaginations and grab the attention and hearts of the people who will see them. As an international workshop leader and author of best-selling books like Within The Frame and The Soul of the Camera (both published in over a dozen languages)\, he’s taught students this incredible craft on all seven continents. David’s lecture will inspire you to go deeper with your craft and find greater joy—and freedom!—in the exploration of your vision. \n\n\nThis is a pre-recorded talk and there will be a discussion afterwards. A number of us have seen David talk in person and on video; he is an amazing and inspiring speaker. \nKhutzeymateen Inlet\, Northern British Columbia\, Canada \ncopyright David DuChemin \ncopyright David DuChemin \ncopyright David DuChemin \n\n

SUMMARY:January Theme: Landscape photography
DESCRIPTION:Landscape Theme Example by Jennifer Leat \nWe hope that you were inspired by Bill Hall’s presentation on Landscape Photography at the beginning of the month. Landscape photography is a genre that we probably all have done\, even if we do not consider this one of our specific photographic interests. For example\, I am sure we all take landscapes when on holiday. So we hope that you will share some of your landscapes or go out and take some winter or urban landscapes this month. Landscape photography is not only those grand vistas of mountains\, but can also include focussing on smaller detail\, zooming in on part of a scene e.g. a single tree\, cityscapes\, and abstract landscapes which concentrate on color\, shape\, and patterns rather than a specific recognisable location. But the rules of composition and design will still apply!!  \nSome ideas can be found here An Introduction to Intimate Landscape Photography and The Many Faces of Landscape Photography | by Spencer Wade | Medium

SUMMARY:February Theme: Colour
DESCRIPTION:Colour Theme Example by Jennifer Leat \nColour is this month’s theme in preparation for the CAPA Inspirational Colour competition in which HG will be participating this month. Colour is a powerful tool in photography\, which different moods being created with warm versus cool colours. – warm colours such as red and orange\, are associated with energy and excitement\, while cool colors\, such as blue and green\, are associated with calm and relaxation. Complementary colours (opposite on the colour wheel) can create a sense of contrast and dynamism and can be used to draw attention to an object in the scene. Colour harmony refers to colours that are close on the wheel and create a sense of balance and unity. \nCAPA describes this competition and its themes as an invitation to photographers to showcase their creative skills\, using colour as a vibrant medium to capture dynamic\, outstanding\, stunning\, thoughtful and thought-provoking images. \nIf you are considering submitting for this CAPA competition\, make sure that you carefully check the requirements and sub-themes\, see 2027 Colour Competition – Canadian Association for Photographic Art \n

SUMMARY:April Theme: Nature photography
DESCRIPTION:Nature Theme Example by Jennifer Leat \nThis theme follows our speaker\, Martin Ross’ recent presentation on Impact In Nature Photography. We hope that you will have been inspired with some new approaches and ideas that you can try this month. Photographing nature is a way of turning an ordinary walk into an adventure or learning to sit still/slow down to notice the wildlife around you whether that be a small flower\, cheeky squirrel\, that bird that is singing or a deer in a clearing. It does not require travelling to exotic places\, as there is much to photograph wherever we are. It demands patience and learning the behaviours of animals to you can anticipate their movements\, and encourages a deeper connection with nature around us.
