SUMMARY:Guest Speaker: Peter Hill – Scapes
DESCRIPTION:Direct from Katoomba\, Australia\, via Zoom\, our guest speaker will be Peter Hill\, an award winning black and white photographer. Although many of his awards are in landscape and nature\, he shoots in a wide range of genres including abstracts\, street\, architecture\, portraits\, etc.  Due to the very positive feedback we received from members on Peter’s previous talks\, we have invited him back to talk about ‘scapes’. \nThis presentation will be focused on photographic issues associated with: landscapes\, cityscapes\, seascapes\, waterscapes\, and cloudscapes. \nWe will look at each type of scape in turn\, with plenty of photographic examples\, but without trying to define their scope\, as some scapes can blend into each other.  We will instead ask and hopefully answer questions such as: what challenges does each scape represent to the photographer? What makes a ‘good’ scape photograph? People in scapes – good or bad? Do particular scapes require particular camera and other gear? As we take this geographically inclined journey we won’t dwell on the question of colour versus black & white for scapes\, but we may touch on it. \nWe will\, however\, definitely deal with the following specific topics\, and more: \n\nA short\, illustrated\, history of landscape photography\nPeople in landscapes and the sometimes thin line between scale\, story\, and self-centred narcissism\nHow to photograph a waterfall\nThe art of getting in close and cropping the frame\nTips\, tricks\, and traps for the photographer in each scape\nGetting on top of things in cityscapes\nThe difference between a cityscape and a street shot\nBreaking the rules of composition for a seascape\n\nGuests are welcome for this talk\, please complete the Guest Registration Form .  We will be in contact.  The guest fee is $10. \nPeter’s Flickr site: https://www.flickr.com/photos/51321042@N02/

SUMMARY:Dan Gillespie AV Show Night
DESCRIPTION:An evening in honour of Dan Gillespie. \nDan loved how AV shows brought members together. Help us continue this tradition and remember Dan by submitting an AV show to share. \nSubmit one AV show (in an .mp4 format) that is a maximum of 5 minutes long.  Since an audio visual show takes a bit more work to make\, you can share a collection of images that would be shown as a slide show by the moderator. \nBring your audio visual show on a USB stick.  Come early to load it on the club’s computer for presentation.  If participating via Zoom\, use one of the following procedures to submit your AV show (preferably by Jan 13th): \n\nIf you have your own file sharing system (Dropbox\, Google Drive\, etc)\, you can send the download link to submissions@highlandglen.ca and the moderator can collect the file.\nIf you want to send in a show\, send an email to submissions@highlandglen.ca and the moderator will send you a file request through Dropbox. The file request will provide a link for uploading the file.

SUMMARY:Virtual Guest Speaker: David duChemin - The Heart of the Photograph
DESCRIPTION:A compelling photograph is more than visual. It’s visceral. We don’t only see it\, we feel it. It’s more than just focusing our lenses\, it’s also focusing the attention of those who will experience our photographs. Great gear helps\, but what about the other tools? What about juxtaposition and mystery\, story\, mood\, depth\, and energy? What about the power of a great moment? And when it comes to gear\, is it enough that we have all the tools\, like great optics\, or should we be developing a sensitivity to the unique ways in which different focal lengths amplify the feeling of a scene when used well? \nThe Heart of the Photograph is an inspiring presentation about these very ideas\, and it will change the way you make your photographs and reignite the spark if it has cooled off. \nPhotographer and best-selling author David duChemin has taught this amazing craft on all seven continents\, and has appeared on stages for companies like Amazon and Apple to teach the human side of this craft. With over 35 years experience making photographs\, his calling is to help photographers make photographs that are more than just sharp and well-exposed. David teaches how to make photographs that light a spark in people\, that communicate clearly\, that captivate imaginations and grab the attention and hearts of the people who will see them. As an international workshop leader and author of best-selling books like Within The Frame and The Soul of the Camera (both published in over a dozen languages)\, he’s taught students this incredible craft on all seven continents. David’s lecture will inspire you to go deeper with your craft and find greater joy—and freedom!—in the exploration of your vision. \nThis is a pre-recorded talk and there will be a discussion afterwards. A number of us have seen David talk in person and on video; he is an amazing and inspiring speaker. \nKhutzeymateen Inlet\, Northern British Columbia\, Canada

SUMMARY:Jack MacAuley: Black & White Prints
DESCRIPTION:Influential Photographer: Yousef Karsh \n“There is a brief moment when all there is in a man’s mind and soul and spirit is reflected through his eyes\, his hands\, his attitude. This is the moment to record.”  Yousef Karsh \nBlack & White Prints by Jack MacAuley\n \n“I’ve lived in Kitchener since 1965\, and shortly fell in love with the lush southern Ontario landscape. My photographs are taken in all seasons\, but I have a special interest in winter photography. My teachers and mentors Howard Bond\, Stuart Nudelman\, and Norman Rothschild have given me a lot of coaching\, for which I am very grateful. Although photography is a medium based on technology\, the important part of my background are the people. The arts community in Waterloo Region is a growing and vital one. My fellow photographers are not my competition; I see us as all being in this together. “  Jack MacAuley \nJack was a member of the Kitchener Society of Artists and is a long-time member of our camera club. He uses 8″ x 10″ and 4″ x 5″ view cameras for his black and white landscape photography. \nJack requests that members bring a pen and some paper for an exercise.
