SUMMARY:Guest Speaker: JP Stones - Storytelling for Photographers
DESCRIPTION:Great storytelling can help your audience connect emotionally with your images. But understanding how to weave a narrative into your photography can be confusing. How can one photo tell a whole story\, with a beginning\, middle\, and end? \nJP Stones has spent the last 5 years photographing the same group of Mexica\, or Aztec\, dancers. In that time he learned how connected the Mexica are to their mythology. To stories passed down across generations. That’s when he decided that\, as these stories were so vital to Mexica culture\, they needed to play a bigger role in his portraits. \nThis is a talk is about what happened next. About how a desire to tell stories visually\, ended up changing his entire creative process\, and the way people react to his photos.  Using examples from his cultural photography work in Mexico\, JP Stones explores different ways to improve that emotional connection. Including how myths and character archetypes can be harnessed for better storytelling. \nGuests are welcome for this talk\, please complete the Guest Registration Form .  We will be in contact.  The guest fee is $10. \n \nJP Stones on site.  He will be joining us live on Zoom from Mexico.

SUMMARY:Guest Speaker: Philip Maher - Emergency Traveler: Photography for a broken world
DESCRIPTION:Through his own images\, Mr. Maher will share his experiences and photography advice\, having worked in some of the harshest environments.  Above all\, he wants his images to help those forced to struggle on the margins of society.  Surprisingly he notes that his strongest gift is not as a photographer but as a person with a passion for making a difference. \nPhilip Maher has worked as a photojournalist and communications/media specialist for a variety of aid organizations in more than 85 countries. DESCRIPTION:Stephen Orlando of www.motionexposure.com\, did a light painting workshop for Highland Glen a few years ago. He is creating a light art installation for Waterloo’s Lumen Festival on Saturday September 23rd from 6-11pm and would like to invite Highland Glen to take photos. There will be 20 kayaks (10 kayaks at one time) on Silver Lake in Waterloo Park with LED light paddles where the LED colours will be controlled wirelessly from onshore by the public. He won’t be personally taking photos at the event\, but he thought it would be a great opportunity for Highland Glen to get some very unique long exposure shots. \n

DESCRIPTION:Shoot for the Stars –Techniques to Improve your Astro-landscape Photography\nPhotographing at night has challenges and opportunities that just don’t exist for the regular landscape photographer.  Join Peter Baumgarten for this how-to seminar that will help you create impressive night sky images.  Starting with a look at the basics of shooting at night\, you will also discover low level lighting techniques\, live composite star trails\, the value of time lapse sequences\, photo stacking to reduce noise\, and the creation of surreal time-blend images. \nPeter is a professional photographer and educator living on Manitoulin Island in Northern Ontario and he will be joining us via Zoom. We still want you to bring in some images BUT\n– if you are currently working on a project\, can you tell us a little bit about your project and show some sample work\n– if you prefer a particular photographic style\, e.g. nature\, street photography\, birds\, etc\, can you tell us why this grabs your interest and show some sample work\n– if you have been focusing on improving your photographic skills\, can you tell and show us what you are working on\n– if you are focusing on improving your editing skills\, can you show us some examples\, e.g. before and after\, and tell us what your are using\n– if you are a beginning member and the above seems overwhelming (we’ve all been there)\, share some images and tell us how you would like to improve\n– or just show us some images and tell us a little about them \nBring your images on a USB stick or email them to submissions. If you are doing print work\, feel free to bring your prints. \nWe are not limiting to a specific number of images but we would like members to limit their talk to roughly 5 minutes.

DESCRIPTION:In 2019\, we started a friendly inter-club competition with the Fergus & District Camera Club as an annual spring event with Highland Glen and Fergus camera clubs alternating hosting duties for the competition.  Each club enters 30 digital images.  This is an open category competition\, so any subject\, processing technique\, etc. is accepted. \nThe competition is intended to be a showcase of the achievements of the club as a whole and not just a few members. HGCC members can submit up to three images for consideration. DESCRIPTION:On Wednesday March 8th OR Wednesday March 15th we will be heading to Aylmer\, Ontario to see the Tundra Swans. Donations accepted to provide feed for the birds. \nThousands of tundra swans use the Aylmer Wildlife Management Area to refuel on their migration to the high Arctic Region between Alaska and Baffin Island.  Each year it’s expected that 10-60 thousand birds will stopover in Aylmer during March. \nDetails will be available closer to the outing date. \n
