SUMMARY:Members' Night
DESCRIPTION:  \nImage by Julie Seiler “Villa Frederick James” \nFor this evening get ready to share and encourage your fellow photographers.  There will be three segments to the evening:  Influential Photographer presentation\, Image Share and Resource Sharing.  Join us for a fun night of learning and sharing. \nInfluential Photographer:  A HGCC member will present and introduce us to George Hunter\, a Canadian Documentary Photographer. \nImage Share:  With this being St. Patrick’s Day the unofficial theme for tonight is ‘Lucky Shot’.  Whether your pictures fit the theme\, are from your vacation or from other times\, feel free to share up to 4 images and tell us a little about the images. If you would like critique\, please let the group know.  You can bring your images on a USB stick/drive and we’ll load them on the computer before the start of the meeting. Alternatively email them to submissions@highlandglen.ca by dinner time of the 16th.  Please size your images as outlined on our website (here is the link to the specs: https://highlandglen.ca/index.php/digital-competition  which takes you to the Digital Competition web page and halfway down you’ll see a section titled Image Standards) to ensure they show as expected on the screen. \nResource Sharing:  For tonight as well share with the group a photographer you follow (YouTube\, Instagram\, etc.) that you find inspirational and/or helps you with your photography knowledge.

SUMMARY:Theme: Faceless Portraits
DESCRIPTION:Faceless Portraits. What is a faceless portrait? As its name says\, its any type of portrait in which you cannot see the person’s actual face. Its about finding other creative ways to depict a person and their identity and highlight other aspects of your subject (or yourself!). Hiding the face can be done by cropping the image\, using silhouette\, covering the face with hair\, hand\, hat or veil\, photographing from the back of the person\, with their head turned away or with their face in shadow\, photographing other body parts e.g. hand\, deliberately blurring the face e.g. with motion blur\, or using post-processing to remove or blur the face. \nSee How to Take Great Faceless Portraits (+ Posing Ideas) and 16 No Face Photo Ideas You Must Try in 2024 for more information and ideas.

SUMMARY:Theme: Curves and Lines
DESCRIPTION:February theme (Feb 1st – 28th 2025) Curves and Lines. Curves and lines are everywhere around us. \nTry to capture the energy and emotion that lines and curves bring to an image. Explore these powerful compositional elements and experiment with different creative perspectives to develop your unique photographic eye.  Play with perspective of angles and shapes\, framing and editing to highlight lines and curves in an innovative way. \nIn preparation for CAPA’s Curves and Lines competition (images due at HGCC on Mar 17th)\, think about the following themes \n\nGeometry in Nature – images that capture interesting natural shapes and patterns like spirals\, fractals waves\, etc… This theme highlights the curve and repetitions found in the natural world or created within a photographic image.\n\n\nLandscape – images capturing interesting architectural shapes\, leading lines\, patterns in rural or urban environments. This theme focuses on curves\, geometry\, and visual rhythm in human-made surroundings.\n\n\nMinimal Still Life – simple\, clean images of everyday objects arranged in repetitive patterns or positions to emphasize their curves and lines. This theme aims to find the curve and visual interest in mundane items.\n\n\nMotion and Flow – image capturing the curves and created by moving elements such as people\, animals\, vehicles\, water\, smoke etc. This theme focuses on using curves to show movement and energy.\n\n\nKaleidoscope Curves – image featuring interesting reflective symmetry (where shape or pattern is reflected in a mirror line or a line of symmetry)\, or a kaleidoscopic effect. Images will showcase curves\, lines\, and geometric shapes found in modern architecture. Submissions can feature architectural details such as stairs\, railings\, windows\, bridges\, and other structural elements. Creative perspectives showcasing the artistry of modern architectural designs are encouraged.

Help us continue this tradition and remember Dan by submitting an AV show to share. \nSubmit one AV show (in an .mp4 format) that is a maximum of 5 minutes long.  Since an audio visual show takes a bit more work to make\, you can share a collection of images that would be shown as a slide show by the moderator. \nBring your audio-visual show on a USB stick.  Come early to load it on the club’s computer for presentation.  If participating via Zoom\, use one of the following procedures to submit your AV show (preferably by Jan 18th): \n\nIf you have your own file sharing system (Dropbox\, Google Drive\, etc)\, you can send the download link to submissions@highlandglen.ca and the moderator can collect the file.\nIf you want to send in a show\, send an email to submissions@highlandglen.ca and the moderator will send you a file request through Dropbox. SUMMARY:Theme: Colour
DESCRIPTION:Colour is everywhere. See what vibrant and impactful images you can create making the best use of colour. Feel free to accentuate and even play with changed color during editing. \nAs a prelude to CAPA’s Colour Inspiration Competition you might want to start thinking of colour images that fit into one of the following themes: \n\nStill Life – images are skillfully-crafted arrangement(s) of vibrant objects and textures. Experimenting with lighting\, angles\, background and props may contribute to a unique fine art interpretation. The possibilities are endless – the beauty of flowers\, the allure of food\, nostalgia of toys\, the wisdom within books\, elegance of fabric\, the charm of collectibles\, craftsman’s hand tools\, and natural materials.\n\n\nDramatic Contrast & Shadows – images in this theme leverages the power of dramatic contrast and shadows. Sources of inspiration – low-key\, silhouette\, and selective lighting effects to create bold graphic image. Everyday spaces reveal geometric shadows cast by individuals\, buildings\, signs and structures.\n\n\nAction & Motion – image in this theme should convey excitement\, speed\, and movement through colour. Image can be a result of panning effects\, slow shutter speeds and freezing fast action. Source of inspiration is boundless – whether it’s animals\, birds\, dance\, long-exposure shots\, sports\, traffic\, vehicles\, or any other dynamic subject.\n\n\nNature’s Beauty – images capturing inspiring landscapes\, mesmerizing plants\, enchanting animals\, and captivating natural phenomena. Domesticated animals\, birds and drone images are welcome additions to this theme\, allowing for a broad spectrum of natural wonders. All hand-of-man elements are permissible in this theme.\n\n\nTravel – image that transcends the typical postcard and provides a fresh and creative perspective. Submissions are welcome from all corners of Canada or anywhere else in the world.\n\n  \nOur private Mighty Networks site is a great place to share your creations\, or bring your images on an image share night. If you are a HG member and not on Mighty Networks then contact us for someone to “invite you”.  Best way to contact is with an email to submissions@highlandglen.ca. \n  \nHappy Shooting

SUMMARY:Guest Speaker: Randall Romano
DESCRIPTION:Our first Guest Speaker of the season is Randall Romano.  \n \nJoin us to learn about Documentary Street Photography.  Randall will share his experience and images to help you become a better and more confident street photographer sharing techniques to help you succeed on the street. \nFoot Traffic is a photographic series about legs and feet in motion and at rest on the streets of Toronto. \n  \nToronto is the largest financial center in Canada and the second largest in North America\, after New York City. At the peak of commuting it was estimated 250\,000 people came into and out of the financial district on a daily basis. By using documentary\, still photography\, my goal with this project was to experience as many aspects of the commuter life as possible and understand how it felt\, to work and temporarily exist in the realm of tall office buildings. In a Canadian context the existence of a concentrated financial district and the related influx of daily workers is unique. In particular the temporary nature of humanity inhabiting the workday office buildings\, surrounding streets and courtyards. By documenting the nature of this unique phenomenon\, my hope was to preserve a pictorial history\, reflecting the current times.
