My photographs are taken in all seasons\, but I have a special interest in winter photography. My teachers and mentors Howard Bond\, Stuart Nudelman\, and Norman Rothschild have given me a lot of coaching\, for which I am very grateful. Although photography is a medium based on technology\, the important part of my background are the people.The arts community in Waterloo Region is a growing and vital one. My fellow photographers are not my competition; I see us as all being in this together. “  Jack MacAuley \nJack was a member of the Kitchener Society of Artists and is a long-time member of our camera club. DESCRIPTION:We’ll meet in the LCBO parking lot uptown Waterloo\, at the pedestrian underpass that leads to Willis Way at 5:45pm.  Note\, if the weather is extremely cold or wet\, we may cancel. \nThe general walkabout will be from the meeting point and to these general points: \n\nKing St. through the Waterloo Public Square \nErb St. & King St.\nCross to the other side of King St.\nDown Laurel Trail to Regina\nBack to King St.\nUp to William St.\nStop at the Oktoberfest Carillon\nBack on King St. to LCBO parking lot\n\nWe’ll stop at whatever looks good to photograph\, eg. lights\, store fronts\, people\, traffic\, architecture\, etc. \nPlease plan for low light exposure.  You’ll most likely want to increase ISO and may want a mono or tripod.  Safety first!  Wear visible\, warm clothing and comfortable warm walking shoes.  You may want to bring a small flashlight.  Please be aware of automobile and pedestrian traffic. \nPlease let us know by emailing outings.

DESCRIPTION:Great storytelling can help your audience connect emotionally with your images. But understanding how to weave a narrative into your photography can be confusing. How can one photo tell a whole story\, with a beginning\, middle\, and end? \nJP Stones has spent the last 5 years photographing the same group of Mexica\, or Aztec\, dancers. In that time he learned how connected the Mexica are to their mythology. To stories passed down across generations. That’s when he decided that\, as these stories were so vital to Mexica culture\, they needed to play a bigger role in his portraits. \nThis is a talk is about what happened next. About how a desire to tell stories visually\, ended up changing his entire creative process\, and the way people react to his photos.  Using examples from his cultural photography work in Mexico\, JP Stones explores different ways to improve that emotional connection. Including how myths and character archetypes can be harnessed for better storytelling. \nGuests are welcome for this talk\, please complete the Guest Registration Form .  We will be in contact.  The guest fee is $10. \n \nJP Stones on site.  He will be joining us live on Zoom from Mexico.

DESCRIPTION:What CAPA Judges Look For in Your Photography\nJane van Pelt will be discussing what competition judges look for when evaluating images. \nImage Share:\nBring or submit up to 4 digital images or prints to share in tonight’s share session. Be prepared to tell us about your image.  \nFor digital images\, please use the image standards that we use for digital competitions as these work best with our projector. \nYou can bring your images on a USB stick. Come early to load it on the club’s computer for presentation.  Alternatively\, email all images to submissions@highlandglen.ca preferably by dinner time on Saturday September 14th  but no later than dinner time on Sunday September 15th.  \nIf you are submitting images from a phone\, we have directions on how to resize your image for an iOS phone [pdf].   For those using an Android phone\, directions would be similar; you could use the 3rd party app Photo & Picture Resizer.

DESCRIPTION:Through his own images\, Mr. Maher will share his experiences and photography advice\, having worked in some of the harshest environments.  Above all\, he wants his images to help those forced to struggle on the margins of society.  Surprisingly he notes that his strongest gift is not as a photographer but as a person with a passion for making a difference. \nPhilip Maher has worked as a photojournalist and communications/media specialist for a variety of aid organizations in more than 85 countries. DESCRIPTION:Stephen Orlando of www.motionexposure.com\, did a light painting workshop for Highland Glen a few years ago. He is creating a light art installation for Waterloo’s Lumen Festival on Saturday September 23rd from 6-11pm and would like to invite Highland Glen to take photos. There will be 20 kayaks (10 kayaks at one time) on Silver Lake in Waterloo Park with LED light paddles where the LED colours will be controlled wirelessly from onshore by the public. He won’t be personally taking photos at the event\, but he thought it would be a great opportunity for Highland Glen to get some very unique long exposure shots. \n
